Millennium Galleries
The Millennium Galleries form phase two of the larger redevelopment of the public realm in Sheffield City centre. The new building, built on a former car park, houses various collections and acts as one of the major venues outside London for international exhibitions. This is a stunning and successful building on a number of levels. Conceived as a series of streets and spaces cut out of the urban fabric, it contains covered arcades that provide a pedestrian link between three of the main public squares. These routes can be used simply as a thoroughfare and are both an informal and welcoming introduction to the gallery space. Sheffield can be justifiably proud of this new and architecturally monumental building.
