Winter Garden
Shortlisted - Structural Category
Timber was the practical as well as aesthetic choice for Sheffield's Winter Garden. The single glazed building (with 1400 framed roof panels) is supported by a composite structure of larch glulam beams with stainless steel connectors. Architect Pringle Richards Sharratt chose these as they can be curved into shape without using heavy plant (unlke steel) and have a beautiful finish when sanded. The gardens form part of the city's millennium development.
