Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award 2009 Shortlist

CABE/ Better Public Building

The Herbert Art Gallery has been shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award. The judges commented:

"The striking pavilion structure for the Herbert Art Gallery has given Coventry a new public heart." and

"Imaginative re-use of an existing building, with a beautifully crafted new extension, make a striking addition to Coventry’s regenerated city centre. A glazed public arcade extends the public realm through the building."

Now in its ninth year, the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award recognises new buildings, places and spaces that improve the delivery of public services, give a sense of identity and community, are a source of local pride, and help build a sustainable future.

The award is made annually to a new building project of any size and budget commissioned by or on behalf of central or local government or by a grant-aided organisation. Uniquely, it rewards excellence in both design and procurement from across the public sector.

The winner of the 2009 awards will be announced on October 14th.
