Five chase Garden Museum work
Garden Museum seeks architect for extension

A five strong shortlist is chasing a scheme to build an extension to the Garden Museum worth up to £4.8 million.

The museum, which is next door to Lambeth Palace in south London, was set up in 1977 and was recently redeveloped by Dow Jones Architects. This was phase 1 of a two-stage scheme and was completed back in 2010.

Dow Jones has again made the shortlist for the larger phase along with Antarctic research station designer Hugh Broughton Architects. Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects, Witherford Watson Mann Architects and ZMMA round out the list for the job which attracted 40 entries.

The value of work is estimated at between £3.2 and £4.8 million with the winning firm asked to restore the church and churchyard, expand exhibition space within the current building and design a new building for the museum grounds.

Interviews will be held in early March with a winner due to be named by the middle of that month. Work is expected to start on site in 2015.
