William Morris Gallery wins £100,000 Art Fund and Museum of the Year award
The William Morris Gallery has been named the 2013 Museum of the Year, winning £100,000 from the Art Fund.
The William Morris Gallery is 2013's Museum of the Year, it has been announced, and has won the £100,000 Art Fund prize. The gallery, which reopened in 2012 after a major redevelopment, shows the work of Victorian designer William Morris and is based in Walthamstow, north London.
The £10,000 Clore Award has been awarded to The Hepworth Wakefield, in recognition of its education programme for children and young people.
The winners were revealed live on BBC Radio 4 Front Row, broadcast from a ceremony at the V&A museum in London.
The judges said the gallery "was truly the Museum of the Year", adding that it "set the highest standards of curatorship, and reached out impressively to its local community, and offers a memorable way of experiencing art of the highest quality in the context of a great historic personality".
Telegraph Arts Editor in Chief Sarah Crompton, who was on the judging panel said the gallery was "a magnificently restored building, which explains Morris’s life, work and significance in an eminently approachable way, without sacrificing intelligence or curatorial investigation".
10 galleries and museums were shortlisted for the prize, including the Baltic Centre in Gateshead, The Beaney in Canterbury, the Dulwich Picture Gallery and Horniman Museum and Gardens in London, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Preston Park Museum and Gardens and Cambridge's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.
