69 The Old High Street

Folkestone, Kent

Pringle Richards Sharratt were appointed by the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust to work with the Creative Foundation to design a series of mixed use projects in the heart of Folkestone’s Old Town to support creative industries and provide living accommodation for those who work in the creative industries.

This project is one of three the practice has been appointed to design as part of a wider three phase master plan that we were also appointed to prepare.

Our approach has been to re-establish the original building form and line of number 69 the Old High Street, including the small yard area which will become a public space and an important feature in the street scape of the Folkestone Old Town Conservation area, but also to create a new high quality building on the site of 11 and 13 Tontine Street that can meet the current standards for residential and commercial property.

The new building will provide  three levels of residential accommodation above two levels of commercial use on Tontine Street, making use of the change in levels between these two streets, whilst behind the retained façade of number 69 three levels of residential accommodation will be provided above one level of commercial use.
