Best Public Building Category Commendation

This category was keenly contested. The judges decided to make a commendation as well as nominating a winner. The commendation goes to the music facility at Shrewsbury School for the way in which the building relates to its site and the care and precision of its detailing.

The building resolves the conflicting demands of a three-storey high auditorium with the small scale practice and teaching rooms by partially burying the large volume in the hillside. The external walls are set on a brick plinth designed to provide continuity with nearby garden walls and neighbouring buildings.
