1-6 Lombard Street, City of London
1 Lombard Street, London for Canada Life
Set in a prestigious site in the City of London next to Mansion House and opposite the Bank of England, 1-6 Lombard Street is a Grade II listed building. Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects were commissioned by Canada Life in 2006 to prepare master-plan proposals for the refurbishment of the whole building and capable of being implemented on a floor by floor basis phased to a programme aligned with existing tenant leases.
The proposals included for the relocation and rationalisation of the core provision to the building – including modern toilet and other support facilities and new services throughout while at the same time restoring and working with the historic and heritage features of the building.
The first phase in 2006 comprised the Category A and B fit-out of one floor for Canada Life as its City headquarters. This phase also included work to the entrance hall, lifts, reception and external terraces involving extensive consultation with English Heritage and the City Planning Authorities. Since this first phase four other floors have been refurbished to Cat A and Cat B including an additional floor for Canada Life housing their executive suite.
An important brief requirement was the need for all phases to be carried out with existing tenants in occupation – a consideration which involved very strict control of those aspects likely to cause disruption.
The second phase has been completed in 2024.
